MLK Jr. Day of Service 2021
Dates: 12/14/2020 - 1/18/2021
Join us as we continue our annual tradition of gathering with our neighbors in service and activism to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
United Way for Greater Austin brings people, ideas, and resources together to fight poverty in our community, and we can only fight poverty as a community by standing up for racial justice. Dr Martin Luther King Jr.believed in the power of individuals to strengthen communities and achieve common goals. As we reflect on the past year, Dr. King’s legacy, and our own mission of bringing people together to fight poverty we encourage you to join us in engaging, learning, and taking action to move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”
For our 2021 MLK JR. Day of Service, we invite you to take part in either one or both of these self-guided activities before we meet together virtually on Monday January 18th to make for a more meaningful community moment.
Take our self-guided walking tour. Walk through part of the area of Austin that was originally created to segregate Blacks in 1928, and reflect on how walking played a critical role in the Civil Rights Era.
Celebrate the life of Dr. King by viewing his "I Have a Dream" speech, engageing in discussion around his life and legacy, and taking a virutal tour of his childhood home in Atlanta. We've curated an easy at home activity.
Then gather with us virtually at 10am on Monday January 18th, MLK Jr. Day for a short community moment, reflection, and advocacy call to action. Special guest Dr. Kazique Prince will join to lead our community relfection. Registration details here! Please follow the CLICK HERE button above for event details and materials.
