Prepare & Deliver Food for Survivors of Sexual Exploitation
SAFE runs a drop-in center where survivors of sexual exploitation can eat, rest, and receive case management and therapy. So that we can allocate more dollars towards helping provide the survivors with more immediate stability, we need volunteers to prepare/purchase and deliver the food, disposable goods (plates, napkins, plasticware, cups), drinks, dessert, and to-go containers. The food can be either homemade or storebought, and it must be delivered hot (we do not have access to an oven) to our rented space in the 78702 zip code at 4:00pm on the day that you choose to deliver. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to a minimum of one night/month for six months, but we can be flexible. We have openings Monday – Thursday. Mondays require snacks for 6, Tuesdays/Wednesdays require a hot meal for 8, and Thursdays require a hot meal for 6.
A lot of folks ask about what the survivors like to eat. Since all of them come from chaotic environments, they tend to have relied on fast food and food from convenience stores. Because of this, they typically prefer food that is simple, spicy, and/or fried. The dishes that haven’t been too successful so far have been ones that have stereotypically really healthy ingredients (kale, quinoa, etc.). We also tend to eat a lot of lasagna, so your creativity is appreciated. Think about meals like a taco/nacho bar, spaghetti/meatballs, chili and cornbread, etc.
